Nicholas Smith

Having worked in defence for over 25 years, including serving in the RAF, Nic understands the complexities of the defence industry first hand and is well placed to deliver projects to our Defence and National Security customers.

He began military life as an aircrew Weapons Systems Officer specialising in Antisubmarine Warfare, Search & Rescue and Special Mission, before requalifying to become a mission systems Flight Trials specialist. Nic wore several hats during his time in the RAF, serving with NATO as Air Director for NSOCC-Afghanistan and onwards to tactical special mission ISR roles on the Shadow system. As a staff officer he delivered major programme artefacts to support large scale MOD ISR acquisitions including POSEIDON and RIVET JOINT. In his most recent Defence role, Nic worked as a Science, Innovation and Technology Leader, working closely with UK Cyber & Specialist Operations Command, Defence Science & Technology, Dstl and FVEYs SOF technology partners on collaborative R&D and innovation projects for the specialist user community.

Today, alongside his role at Sirius, Nic is also a mentor on an innovative programme Hacking for MoD (H4MOD), led by the Common Mission Project UK. H4MOD gives students a chance to work with and try to solve real-world defence related problems which have been set by the MOD, supported by mentors working within the defence sector. 

A Saturday for Nic includes horse riding with his daughter before heading out for a run and his day normally ends with playing Dad’s taxi around the county.
